The Restaurant

"Vale un peccato" is an old Sicilian saying and means: that is a sin worth. What Giovanni Spartano is offering in his trattoria with red and white checked table cloth, is one of the best Italian cuisine in Berlin.

Guests will be welcomed with South Italian hospitality and delicious bruschetta on homemade bread and a portion of black olives. In the display case are mostly homemade antipasti and delicate grilled courgette from Giovanni’s backyard. Aubergine, tomatoes, onions, salad and beans are cultivated there as well. "Almost the same as in Sicily", Giovanni is joking. He likes the native cuisine from his country, which is prepared and served in "Vale un Peccato" in the manner of "Nonna", the grandmother. That also means that the slightly flowery olive oil comes from Sicilian trees.

The range of pasta, meat and fresh fish is extensive in "Vale un Peccato". Besides every day freshly made dishes are served, which are recommended from mouth to mouth, meaning that these dishes are sold out quickly during the evening. For instance, if our chef Gaetano makes Polpette, small and crumbly balls of veal in flavoured tomato sauce with Pennete noodles, guests can chose between a delicate glass of red or white wine from Sicily.

Or even when Giovanni makes his well known sausage Salsiccia, flavoured with fennel seeds, from his sister’s garden near Agrigent, and accompanied by Casarecce noodles and seasoned with some fruity tomato Sugo. The marvellous and tender steak is traditionally served with spinach and potatoes with rosemary.

Mare e Monti, juicy shrimps with beef tenderloin, is also very delicious. Sea food is found in dishes as the famous grilled Calamaretti on arugola or Spaghetti Vongole. One of the pasta specialties is Linguine Scoglio. Flat noodles are served with a great portion of baby calamary, mussels, prawns and monkfish. All accompanied by a fantastic Sugo, flavoured with some saffron and white wine.

Finest grilled fish as gilthead, sea bass for two people or sword fish are traditionally filleted at the table and are served with a delicious Sicilian herbal and olive oil sauce, which is highly addictive. Even freshly caught fish in a crust of salt is one the many specialities of Vale un Peccato.

The homemade Tiramisu or the Cassata ice cream are just two culinary highlights of the classic desserts, the Dolci. The culmination is a Ristretto, a “short” espresso with little water, which you only get in Berlin with this quality. If the culinary evening pleasantly fades, guests can enjoy a free Digestivo as a sign of hospitality of the "Vale un Peccato".
